Where did Bowen Therapy originate?

The Bowen Technique was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia over 50 years ago. Tom became interested in ways to alleviate human suffering and began developing his technique in the 1950s. The Bowen Technique is now practiced around the world.

What to expect

Bowen Therapy is very different to other modalities because it is extremely gentle and does not require any forceful manipulation. The Bowen move is a rolling motion over muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves which creates electrical impulses sent through the nervous system reminding the body to regain normal movement.

The technique can be performed through light clothing and there are purposeful pauses between moves. These pauses have a very important role, as they allow the body to receive the messages and create deep, long-lasting healing and pain relief.

After Treatment

Your body may feel tired and heavy, or it may feel energised and light. Everybody is different and your body will respond according to its innate healing ability.

It is important to drink plenty of water after your Bowen session and gentle walking will help align your body (so moving around is encouraged).

The Bowen treatment keeps working in your body for many days after the session. The strongest results may occur in the first 5-7 days but it can take up to 10 days to be fully integrated.

Ideally your next Bowen Treatment should be scheduled 7 days later.
